USDA Subsidizes Going Solar

According to the USDA, “Higher energy-related production costs would generally lower agricultural output, raise prices of agricultural products, and reduce farm income.” It is for this reason that the USDA is assisting farmers in going solar. If you have a commercial agricultural business and are within the areas designated as “rural” by the USDA, you qualify for a 25% grant in the cost of going solar. Furthermore, the 30% Federal Investment Tax Credit (FITC) also applies. Finally, farmers are less likely to sell their business than any other industry. Thus, the Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS), provides a 3rd incentive to go solar. This allows for 85% depreciation of your new system in the first year. As a result, most farmers are realizing only 20-25% of the total cost of a solar system.

Solar Battery Backup

Depending on your farm’s operations, a battery backup system may make sense. These can also be paired with a generator to ensure that your farm never loses power. These are big features for chicken or turkey coops, where a loss of power, even for a few hours, can mean a catastrophic loss of livestock. These can also power well water pumps or other essential features.

Solar Powered Generator

Although these are not solar powered, it doesn’t mean that they don’t work well with solar and battery systems. Our focus is to ensure your operations are not disrupted, and often that includes a generator. In the event of a loss of power, a battery backup system can discharge power, just as a generator would. Oftentimes, generators are included as a “backup to the backup.” The batteries can discharge first, saving your expensive fuel. If the batteries become depleted, the generator will kick on, and while providing power, it will also charge the batteries. This becomes even more valuable in the event of massive storms, where the solar powered battery may not be able to charge as quickly due to heavy cloud cover.

Roof Replacement

If your solar system is going on a barn roof, you’re eligible for a roof replacement included in your system cost. These are often eligible for all the incentives as well. Essentially, you’re getting a new roof for 20-25% of the cost.
